Jillian Jiggs brings her antics to the library
FORT ERIE PUBLIC LIBRARY
Have you ever read about the irrepressible heroine of picture books, Jillian Jiggs? Do you have plans for tomorrow afternoon? The Fort Erie Public Library would like to invite kids of all ages (the grownup ones, too) to the Stevensville Hall for a 2 p.m. presentation of To Be Determined Theatre Company’s live performance of Jillian Jiggs. This interactive theatrical experience combines some of Phoebe Gilman’s most beloved stories to create an energetic and imaginative adventure, brimming with live music, dancing, comedy, fun and surprises around every corner. Thanks to a generous donation from the Friends of the Library, this play will be free for all to attend. Please pick up your tickets in advance at any branch. Many of Gilman’s Jillian Jiggs stories are available in the library collection; ask at any branch or search online at www.fepl.ca to place a hold.
More fun is in store at the library throughout the week ahead. If you are five to 14 years old, and you enjoy creating with Lego, visit the Centennial branch on Monday evening, Aug. 14 at 6:30 p.m. when you can compete for the title of Fort Erie’s Lego Champ at our Lego Build Tournament. We’ll have several rounds of speed builds, creativity builds, and a special championship face-off build. There is no registration required, and no fee, so just show up and have a great time building. On Wednesday evening, Aug. 16 at 6 p.m. at the Stevensville branch, it’ll be time to bring your stuffed animal friends to the popular Stuffie Sleepover, a party, craft and storytime all rolled into one great session. All ages are welcome to come in your pyjamas and get ready to play games, make crafts, and listen to some bedtime stories. You’ll leave your stuffie for a sleepover, and find out the next day what wacky fun they get up to after the library closes! The Paint Parties at the library have been such a hit all summer long, that we’ve opened up a brand new session. Call now to register for a Paint Party on Saturday, Aug. 19 at 11 a.m. at the Crystal Ridge branch of the library. Local artist Ben Featherston will guide young artists ages seven and older in creating their own work of art, this time with an underwater theme. Paint Parties have a $5 registration fee.
Adults may enjoy movies at the library. Tonight, How to Change the World uses archival footage to recount the story of the environmental pioneers whose actions in a nuclear test zone marked the 1971 founding of Greenpeace. Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk, a modern depiction of the contrast between the home front and the soldier’s life in a war zone, directed by Ang Lee, will be screened on Thursday, Aug. 17. Both films are at the Centennial branch, and begin at 6:30 p.m.
A reminder that local author Lexie Hancock will be greeting fans, old friends and avid readers at the Centennial branch this Saturday, Aug. 12, starting at 2 p.m. for the Fort Erie launch of her latest book, a young people’s paranormal suspense story titled The Wink Murderer, a new release from World Castle Publishing. All are welcome. Amy Roebuck is the community services coordinator at the Fort Erie Public Library.
