Collision kills two beloved geese in Nova Scotia

-

HALIFAX — Two geese are dead after being hit by a vehicle at a crosswalk the popular birds use to access a pond at a park in Dartmouth, N.S.

Police say a man was driving on Prince Albert Road during the rush hour Wednesday when he struck three of the geese, who were crossing over from the Elliott Street area to Sullivan’s Pond.

Police say the driver didn’t see the birds as they crossed the road.

One goose died at the scene, while a second injured bird was taken to a veterinarian and later died — a third goose swam to an island in the pond and is being monitored by volunteers.

Police say no charges have been laid against the driver.

The pond’s geese have been a visible presence for years in downtown Dartmouth.

ST. JOHN’S, N.L. — It appears Canadians were among the first diners in the world to eat a genetically modified animal — and they likely didn’t know it.

U.S.-based AquaBounty Technologies says in a recent fiscal update about 4.5 tonnes of its fresh AquAdvantage salmon fillets were sold in Canada between April and June.

The company got approval from Health Canada and the Canadian Food Inspection agency last year to sell the product.

AquaBounty — which has a production plant in P.E.I. — did not say exactly where the salmon was sold, and the company’s spokesman could not be reached right away.

Health Canada doesn’t require labelling on genetically modified food because the items have been assessed for safety and nutritional standards. AquaBounty’s salmon contains genetic material from ocean pout and Chinook salmon to help it reach adult size faster.

4.5 tonnes of unmarked genetically modified salmon fillets sold in Canada Woman charged after infant found dead

INNISFIL, Ont. — A 42-year-old woman is facing charges after the body of an infant boy was found in Innisfil, Ont.

Police say they made the discovery after a doctor’s office received a call Wednesday from a woman claiming to have given birth out of hospital without medical assistance. They say officers went to check in on her and found the baby, who they believe died on July 30.

An autopsy is planned to determine the cause of death.

Police say the woman is charged with neglecting to obtain assistance in childbirth and concealing the body of a child. The Canadian Press
