Cold, staffing lead to delays in garbage, recycling collection

-

Niagara Region says curbside garbage, recycling and organics collection continues to be delayed as a result of cold weather, collection contractor staffing and vehicle issues.

According to a public service announcement put out by the Region, the collection contractor, Emterra Environmental, was unable to complete all of Friday’s garbage, recycling and organics collection across the region by Sunday, despite their efforts.

The Region says the collection contractor was out Monday collecting the remaining recyclable material (blue and grey box) in Grimsby, Lincoln, West Lincoln, Thorold and St. Catharines, making every attempt to finish collecting Friday’s recycling route.

Recycling was expected to be completed by end of the day Monday.

Residents in Niagara Falls whose regular collection day is Friday are being asked to remove their recyclable material from the curb and place it out for collection on Saturday.

There is no limit to the amount of recycling material that residents can place curbside for collection.

If residents’ blue and grey boxes are full, they may use a rigid container or a clear plastic bag to place recyclables at the curb.

Residents in Fort Erie, Grimsby, Lincoln, Niagara Falls, St. Catharines, Thorold and West Lincoln whose regular collection day is Friday and did not have their garbage and/or organic material collected by 7 p.m. this past Sunday are being asked to remove their remaining material from the curb and place it out for collection on Saturday.

Residents in the affected areas will be permitted to place three garbage bags or containers curbside for collection Saturday.

There is no limit to the amount of organic material that residents can put out for collection.

If residents’ green bins are full, they may use a rigid container or yard waste bags to place organics at the curb.

For more information, residents may call the Region’s Waste Management Services information line at 905-356-4141 or 1-800-5945542, Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
