Frozen feline on the mend

- ALISON LANGLEY

A stray cat found partially frozen in Niagara Falls is now recuperating at a Burlington veterinarian clinic.

A local woman discovered the cat Jan. 7. She posted about the frozen feline on a Facebook group dedicated to finding lost pets in Niagara and Sue Chandler stepped forward to help.

“She thought she had died and then noticed she was clinging to life,” said Chandler, a resident of St. Catharines.

Chandler contacted Oakville based Ninth Life Cat Rescue of Ontario which agreed to take the cat. The cat, now named Violet, continues to recover at Askey Animal Hospital in Burlington.

“We were unsure if she would survive as she has severe frostbite on her paws ears and nose,” Chandler said. “Her mouth was blue.”

Chandler plans to foster the black and white cat at her home once Violet is well enough to leave the vet clinic.

Meanwhile, Ninth Life Cat Rescue is accepting donations to help cover the expenses associated with Violet’s care.

The registered charity is run by volunteers and does not receive any government funding. It relies on private donations to operate. For further information, visit www. ninthlifecatrescue.org.

Chandler said Violet’s ordeal should act as a reminder to pet owners to keep their cats indoors during frigid temperatures.
