Activist Ed Smith sets a good example

-

Re. Falls council votes against supervisor motion, Ray Spiteri, Jan. 11

Not one to primarily follow the scripted, or politically correct, it was, if I may so, amazing to see an individual in Ed Smith take on Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority and win.

I also believe columnist Doug Herod, on the same page, got it right in his piece headlined “NPCA gives new meaning to sore losers.”

Which begets the question, what to do about those sore losers who claim to represent “us,” if not merely some of us, in power when they won’t come to heel in a matter so fundamental to justice and serving justice, as much as freedom of expression is and is about, how else one does get to the facts if not also how the cream rises to the top, on what I understand should matter, if not merely to being ”social,” if not the most virtuous and correct kind of, being?

Ed Smith is, to me, a true, gallant and virtuous activist, a justice activist if not a warrior and my “hero,” and sets an example I hope more would follow. Indeed, he is someone I consider better than me, and most of us, sacrificing as much as he did, (and only somewhat compensated, by my calculation) for us.

I wish Ed Smith a wonderful and active, and somehow peaceful and enjoyable retirement, of such admiration and respect and acknowledgement, and so hope he gets more of what I feel he deserves. He has made Niagara if not Canada (if not merely me) look “good,” I’m so sure, if not as brave and faithful as I would rather be. Michael Glavic Niagara Falls
