Man charged with murder
A Fort Erie man has been charged with second-degree murder after human remains were found at a rural property, Saturday.
Niagara Regional Police were called to a residence on Pettit Road near Sutherland Drive around 10 a.m. to check on the welfare of an individual.
“Once in the area, further information was received by the police that warranted the emergency task unit and negotiators being called to the scene,” said NRP Det. Sgt. Jamie Munro.
The road was closed off as negotiators prepared to speak with a man, who police say lived on the property.
“As the property was contained and preparations were being made to make contact with the subject, he was spotted leaving the property and was apprehended by police,” Munro added.
Human remains were subsequently located on the property.
Investigators are now working in conjunction with medical experts in an effort to positively identify the victim.
Munro said it may take “some time” to confirm an identity.
Crime scene investigators are expected to remain on the property for several days processing the scene. While the road is no longer closed, police are encouraging the public to avoid the area as a command post has been set up at the edge of the narrow roadway.
Charged with second-degree murder and causing an indignity to a dead human body is James Dylan Osborne, 32, of Fort Erie. Both charges are in relation to the same victim, police said.
He remains in custody pending a bail hearing.
