Libraries bring communities together

- LAURA TRABUCCO

How do you measure the success of a library? Is it the number of books that are checked in and out? Is it the number of people who walk through the doors? Is it the number of people we can help?

It turns out that all of these are true. Libraries collect many different numbers and metrics to prove their efficacy. Traditionally, some have been more true than others: thirty years ago, the number of books checked in and out was of paramount importance. But libraries are in the middle of a paradigm shift. The digital age has changed the ways people use information, which means it has drastically changed the ways people use books. The library has thousands of wonderful books — but we’re not limited to books anymore. It’s not just physical books that we check in and out — the library also provides access to audiobooks, CDs, and digital copies of books that can be used on your e-reader. Library users can borrow movies, video games, iPads, and ukeleles. We have amazing technology you can use in-person in the library, including our computers, our 3-D printer, and our green screen.

Today, two of the library’s biggest resources are our space and our people. At Fort Erie Public Library, every member of our staff works hard to help us maximize those resources. The programs that we run are meant to be more than just fun. Our programs try to serve a higher purpose: bringing the community together in a way that is educational, inclusive, and accessible. Though, of course, it’s also important that lots of them are fun.

Next week, we will be hosting an all ages board game night for families, teens, adults — all are welcome! Come enjoy an evening of games! Our board game collection includes: Settlers of Catan, Exploding Kittens, Walking Dead Superfight, Anomia, Adventure Time Munchkin, Code Names, and more.

Next week also marks the beginning of our income tax clinics. The library is proud to host these clinics every year: our volunteers have helped more than 400 people every year. Appointments are limited, so please call to check your eligibility and reserve a time slot.

Drop by any branch of the library soon to see our programs that we have lined up for March Break, and get ready for your best March Break ever! Whether you’re into reptiles, bath bombs, space, magic, or emojis, there’s something for everyone at Fort Erie Public Library. Grab your tickets at any branch. We’re excited to be offering programs at all three of our branches. We hope to see you there!
