Memorial set for singer Fraser Loveman

- JOHN LAW

A memorial for Niagara singer Fraser Loveman will be held in St. Catharines next month.

Friends and family of the British Modbeats singer, who died of complications from pneumonia April 6, will gather at the CAW Hall on Bunting Road on June 24, starting at 1 p.m.

“He was such an icon in Niagara’s music scene that I’d like to see something in his name (eventually),” said Fraser’s goddaughter Jennifer Marcoux, girlfriend of the Modbeats’ bassist Joe Colonna.

She’s hoping to see many of Fraser’s former bandmates at the memorial, including his infamous second group, The Village S.T.O.P., who once performed on “The Tonight Show.” She’s the daughter of Village S.T.O.P. guitarist Paul Marcoux.

Loveman and the British Modbeats were a Niagara sensation in the mid-’60s, earning national attention with the release of their 1967 debut album “Mod … is the British Modbeats.” Loveman, with his wild attire and stage flamboyance, was ranked by one music magazine as one of Canada’s favourite male vocalists.

Fraser’s St. Catharines home was a mecca for music buffs, stacked with thousands of vinyl albums.

In later years, he found new fans on Facebook who loved engaging him about music. It’s there many posted memories of him upon news of his death.

The public memorial will run 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The CAW Hall is at 124 Bunting Rd.
