Parties’ power and booze promises

-

Here’s a glance at promises Ontario’s three major political parties have made on the Pickering nuclear plant:

LIBERALS: Continuing to operate the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station up to 2024 — pending regulatory approvals — saving ratepayers as much $600 million, according to government estimates.

NDP: Closing the plant this year and decommissioning it immediately.

PROGRESSIVE CONSERVATIVES: Keeping the plant open until 2024. Here’s a glance at promises on the availability of controlled substances in corner stores:

LIBERALS: Keeping beer, wine and cannabis out of corner stores, expanding the availability of beer and wine in 100 additional grocery stores, implementing announced plans to sell legalized cannabis in standalone, LCBO-run stores focusing solely on cannabis products. Forty are set to open this year, with a total of 150 planned by 2020.

NDP: Maintaining current system that sees beer and wine available in grocery stores but not convenience stores, re-evaluating the existing Liberal plan for cannabis sales with a view to seeing more publicly run distribution outlets than the current proposals suggest.

PROGRESSIVE CONSERVATIVES: Expanding sales of beer and wine — as well as cider and coolers — to corner stores, box stores and any grocery store.
