Spartans win three in a row after 0-6 start

Junior B team defeats Welland, Guelph and Point Edward

Three wins in six days can certainly turn around a disappoint­ing start to any season.

That’s the case for the St. Catharines Spartans junior B lacrosse club.

St. Catharines was 0-6 to start the 2018 Ontario Junior B Lacrosse Associatio­n campaign, but wins over Welland, Guelph and Point Edward have the Spartan ship headed in the right direction.

Last Tuesday on its home floor, St. Catharines edged the Welland Generals 11-10 in a penalty-filled affair.

Mario Caito led the Spartans with five goals. In fact, four different St. Catharines players had five-point games. Tyler Kolodka had four goals and one assist. Sam LeClair had one goal and four helpers, and Connor Aquanno five assists in a game that featured 185 minutes in penalties.

Blake Halladay had the other goal for St. Catharines in its first win of the season.

Friday evening the Spartans opened a 4-0, first-period lead on the Guelph Regals and never looked back in a 13-6 final.

Caito and Kolodka both record-

ed hat tricks and five-point games in the victory.

Alex Gaston added a pair of goals and one assist while Adam Kirchmayer, John Kit, Aaron Ward, Jake Edmands and Trent Jackson chipped in with singles.

Sunday night St. Catharines stopped the Point Edward Pacers 11-5. Alen Hornung was the leading scorer for the Spartans with four assists. Caito had two goals and one helper. Jacob McMillan, Kolodka, and Peyton McIntosh also had two goals apiece while Kit and Aquanno added singles as St. Catharines quickly improved to 3-6 on the season with three straight home wins.

Badawey 10th in scoring

It was a winless week for the Welland Generals, 1-10, but Talon Badawey continues to impress.

The 21-year-old Port Colborne native currently sits in 10th place in the junior B scoring race with 23 goals and 26 assists.

Badawey had four goals and five assists in an 11-10 loss to St. Catharines last Tuesday night.

Peter Hrynuik, and Bailey Fournier-Higgins each scored twice, Gavin McGregor and Mitchell Geoffroy once for the Generals. Tanner Main added three assists in the loss.

Sunday in Welland, the Generals dropped an 11-4 decision to the Owen Sound North Stars as Max Brook scored twice. Hrynuik and Zach Otto had singles.

Thunderhaw­ks fall below .500

Only one game for the 4-5 Niagara Thunderhaw­ks during Week 5 of the junior B campaign, and it was a 13-8 road loss to the Wallacebur­g Red Devils Saturday afternoon.

Zach Luis and Chris Weier both had one goal and two assists apiece for the T’Hawks. David Moyett scored twice, while Kent Baker-Printup, Trent Hunter, Connor Watson and Evan Miller chipped in with a goal apiece.
