The Niagara Falls Review

Express Checkout speeds up the process

- CARRIE BOSCO

Your library is steadily progressing with the world of technology, offering many different ways to use our services, many ways to grow young minds, and to offer ways for our customers to interact and learn new concepts with our many resources.

One such bit of technology is our Express Checkout machines now at both the Victoria Avenue and Community Centre libraries.

The Express Checkout machine can be a sticking point for many who feel they are impersonal and not needed. We’d like to share with you a more positive viewpoint on this bit of technology as we’re excited to have it.

The library is probably one of the first places a child can have their very own identity by way of a library card. The opportunity to pick what they’d like to read and to then present their very own card shows maturity and a respect for the interaction of presenting something and receiving something.

The Express Checkout machine is an extension of this process.

Children love to scan their card under the light and to hear the beep and to scan their items one after the other and then get a receipt — just like at the store. Learning by cause and effect and the process of how items are added is one way of encouraging a respect for borrowing and learning to wait for an action to be completed.

So how does this translate to our adult users? For some, it may be the first bit of technology ever used and a gentle introduction into how you can turn one action into an armful of good reading for the weekend. For others, it may be a way of speeding up their time during a quick lunch hour trip to the library before heading back to work. For those who like a more quiet visit to the library with little interaction — use the Express Checkout this time — we’ll catch up with you on the next visit.

Finally, our Express Checkout machines are giving us a unique opportunity to be out and about in the library space and more available to those who need help searching for a favourite item, and allows us time to work on projects to better serve our customers. We encourage you to come in and give the Express Checkout machine a try next time you’re in.

For hours you can count on, come to the library as we are thrilled that the open hours of all our four locations will not change over the summer. They remain consistent with both evenings and Saturdays.
