Spears excel as Lion tamers at home Spears 21, Lions 14

Travis Arp’s air force controlled the Saturday night skies over Kiwanis Field in St. Catharines.

The Niagara Spears quarterbac­k threw touchdown passes to Joseph Jones, Dante McNamara and Justin Succar as Niagara defeated the Cambridge Lions 27-20 in Ontario Provincial Football League senior varsity action.

The Spears were ahead by two touchdowns when Niagara’s David Hart returned a Cambridge punt 100 yards for the final major of the game.

Placekicke­r Cole MacKinnon made three of four converts for which Spears, who improved to 2-1.

Cambridge fell to 1-2 in league play.

Up next for the senior varsity Spears is a 6:30 p.m. kickoff Saturday against the 0-3 Mississaug­a Warriors.

All games in a bantam-juniorseni­or triplehead­er in the interconfe­rence rivalry will be played

at Loyola Catholic Secondary School, 4010 Sladeview Cres., Mississaug­a.

Next weekend’s bantam schedule has the Spears on the road playing the 0-3 Mississaug­a Warriors in a 1:30 p.m. kickoff.

Quarterbac­k Devin Schiller-Cleveland threw touchdown passes to wide receiver Owen Tofano and running back Jacob Succar as Niagara beat visiting Cambridge in Ontario Provincial Football League action junior varsity action under the lights Friday at Kiwanis Field.

Succar also rushed for a touchdown and Chris Bianco finished the game 3-for-3 on convert attempts for the Spears.

Niagara improved to 2-1. Cambridge fell to 0-3.

The Spears face the 1-2 Mississaug­a for a 4 p.m. start on the road Saturday.

Niagara’s Tier 2 junior team returns to action following a week off with an 8 p.m. kickoff Friday at Kiwanis Field versus the Orangevill­e Outlaws.

The Spears hope to get into the win column after opening the season with a 13-12 road loss to the Toronto Jets.
