Spartans continue to roll

In a span of 12 days the St. Catharines Spartans have won five of six games, and in so doing have played themselves back into a playoff spot in the Ontario Junior B Lacrosse Associatio­n.

After starting the season 0-6, the Spartans are now sitting at 5-7 following victories over Niagara and Owen Sound.

Sunday night in Merritton, Alex Gaston recorded a ninepoint game on two goals and seven assists in a 15-10 win over the visiting Niagara Thunderhaw­ks.

Mario Caito added five goals and three helpers, Connor Aquanno four goals and three assists, Tyler Kolodka one goal and five helpers, Alex Hornung scored twice and chipped in with three assists, while Sam LeClair had a goal and three helpers for St. Catharines.

A night earlier in Owen Sound, the Spartans shot down the North Stars 11-5 as Caito notched a hat trick and one assist. LeClair tallied a pair and three helpers, and Gaston scored twice.

Carter Geoffroy, Aaron Ward and Trent Jackson and Hornung also found the back of the net in the victory.

Last Thursday on the road, Caito and Aquanno scored twice, Hornung and Gaston once in an 11-6 loss to the Hamilton Bengals.

Thunderhaw­ks go 1-2

The Niagara Thunderhaw­ks sit at 5-7 on the campaign after picking up a win in Point Edward, but losing at home to Hamilton and on the road to St. Catharines.

Matt Mines scored once and added five helpers in a 10-7 victory over the Pacers.

Evan Miller added five assists in the win, while Saul Vanderzalm and Aidan Buis each scored twice.

Reid Lowe and Nathan Maloney each added a goal and two helpers, as Nathan Fragnito, Zach Luis and Chris Weier also found the back of the net for Niagara.

David Moyett led the Thunderhaw­ks with two goals and two assists in a 13-8 loss to Hamilton.

Lowe had a goal and two helpers. Vanderzalm, Connor Watson, Luis, Malcom Vanderzalm and Maloney had the other T’Hawks goals.

Luis led the way in a 15-10 loss to St. Catharines with two goals

and three assists. Lowe, two goals, one assist; Mines, one goal, two assists; Miller, two goals, one assist; and Moyett, one goal, two assists; all recorded three-point games.

Malcolm Vanderzalm and Weier had the other Niagara goals.

Bengals wallop Generals

The Welland Generals, 1-11, had a quiet week playing only one game, and dropping a 15-4 decision to the visiting Hamilton Bengals.

Peter Hyrnuik scored twice, Talon Badawey and Justin Porga once for the Generals who haven’t won since April 27, when they defeated the Spartans 10-7.
