Tight points races at Humberstone Speedway
Only 10 points separate top three in Thunder Stocks class
The winningest drivers aren’t the ones dominating the racing divisions at New Humberstone Speedway.
Defending Late Model champion Chad Homan of Macedon, N.Y., near Rochester, so far has set the pace in four features at the Port Colborne track this season, as has Mitch Dumont of Welland in Pro 4 Trucks.
However, it’s St. Catharines’ Cody McPherson, a three-time winner in the Sportsman class, who has the largest points leadheading into the weekend. McPherson leads Port Colborne’s Adam Leslie 398-332 in the points race in his quest for his second track championship at Humberstone and first since 2012.
Rounding out the top five in the track’s top division are Jay Mallory, Jordan Cosco, both of St. Catharines and each with 314 points; and defending champion Chad Chevalier, Port Colborne, 292 points.
Leroy Buscumb’s 45-point lead over Evan Curtis of St. Catharines in Mini Stocks is the second largest, 356-309. Buscumb shares the division lead in victories with fellow Port Colborne racer Olivier Larocque, two apiece.
Jillian Hils, Larocque and Jay Moulton, St. Catharines; have 239, 230 and 212 points, respectively, six weeks into the season.
With 558 points, Homan leads a top five of Rob Pietz, Port Colborne, 531; Sam Pennacchio, Niagara Falls, 529; Jeff Dayman, Welland, 523; and Colton Ledingham, Port Colborne, 504; in Late Model points.
Only 10 points separate the top three in the race for the Thunder Stocks track title at Humberstone.
Stevensville’s Pete Reid, with three wins so far this season, leads Hagersville’s Dave Bailey, the two-time defending track champion and a two-time winner this year, 382-376 in points. Right behind them, with 372 points, is Jason Fontaine, a three-time track champion whose last title came in 2015.
Jim Lampman, Caistor Centre, 328 points; and Brian (Go Fast) Teeple, Thorold, 312; round out the top five in Humberstone’s full-fender, 8-cylinder division.
Top five in Pro 4 Trucks points: Dumont, 352; Craig Vlasic, Welland, 320; Danny Wurster, Niagara Falls, 290; Justin Towers, Jay Dupuis, each with 280.
On track Sunday at Humberstone is the BEI Lightning Series’ annual visit. Gates open at 4:30 p.m. and racing starts two hours later.
