Niagara youngster to compete at CNE talent competition
Ten-year-old Althea Timaan has lofty goals.
“I hope to be a singer or a doctor,” the Niagara Falls girl said.
She’s setting aside a future in medicine this month to focus on her singing.
The Grade 6 student at Loretto Catholic Elementary School has been selected to compete in the CNE Rising Star Talent Competition.
Althea will compete Aug. 20 in the junior division, which is open to children ages six through 12, for a grand prize of $1,000.
Contestants will be judged on their natural ability, audience appeal, stage presence and the quality of their performance.
“I love singing,” she said, adding she doubts she’s be plagued by nerves when she takes centre stage at the Enercare Centre in Toronto.
Althea has been singing since she was a toddler, and began taking lessons when she was five.
“We have videos of her singing at two years old,” said her mother Mary Jean.
Althea, who also enjoys playing the piano, is not new to competitions. She previously competed in Festival’s Got Talent at the Fort Erie Friendship Festival and Hidden Talent, a national vocal competition.
Her music idols include Alicia Keys, Whitney Houston and Hailee Seinfeld.
This is the 32nd year for the CNE Rising Star Talent Competition, which showcases artists from across Ontario between the ages of six and 21.
The Rising Stars will compete at the CNE from Aug. 17 to Sept.
