Clubs from region win seven golds

St. Catharines has six first-place finishes, South Niagara one at Henley Regatta

Argentina won the efficiency trophy at the 136th Royal Canadian Henley Regatta earning 75.35 per cent of a possible 215 points in sculling and sweeping events.

Vesper rowed to the most gold medals, with eight.

Argentina won six gold medals as did the host St. Catharines Rowing Club.

The South American country’s men’s championsh­ip was in the running to win the top award as well but lost the Craig Swayze Memorial Trophy to a University of Western Ontario composite crew that included two rowers from Niagara Region.

Ethan McAlpine, St. Catharines Rowing Club; and Jared Naar, South Niagara Rowing Club; were part of a crew that was thrown together at the last minute and went directly to Sunday’s final on Martindale Pond in St. Catharines.
