Friendship flags to fly at Old Fort Erie this weekend

-

Residents are invited to celebrate the long-standing relationship between Canada and Cuba with a barbecue this Sunday at Old Fort Erie.

The Canadian-Cuban Friendship Association of Niagara invites local residents to celebrate friendship between the two countries with a barbecue, music and an opportunity to meet members of Cuba’s diplomatic mission to Canada. Toronto Consul of Cuba, Susana Malmierca, husband, Ramon Ramirez, also Consul of Cuba, Ingrid Izquierdo, husband Yuris Palacio and their families have been invited as special guests.

This event will take place Sunday, Aug. 19, 2-6 p.m. at the Niagara Parks Commission pavilion at Old Fort Erie. In honour of our guests and symbolic of CanadaCuba friendship the Cuban flag will be raised beside the flag of Canada for the day.

Both consuls will be available to answer questions on Cuba's latest developments. The celebration comes in the wake of increased interest in Cuba due to recent progress in U.S.-Cuba relations.

The barbecue is not only a time to highlight Cuban culture and remember good times and good friends met in Cuba on winter vacations. For CCFA Niagara it is a fundraiser to provide scholarships for local residents to volunteer in Cuba as part of the Canada-wide Che Guevara Volunteer Work Brigade. In 2017 four Niagara residents joined the brigade. Next year the groups hope for several more.

Several Niagara MPs, MPPs and municipal elected officials are scheduled to attend to meet the Cuban Diplomatic Mission in a casual, informal atmosphere.

Tickets are $10. Call 905-3823468 or email info@ccfaniagara.ca A limited number will be available at the door.

The Canadian-Cuban Friendship Association of Niagara is celebrating its 17th anniversary as an organization of local volunteers which promotes friendship and solidarity.
