NovelBranch offers innovative way to access library materials

- LAURA CHADWICK Laura Chadwick is the Information Resources and Connections Librarian with the Niagara Falls Public Library.

Home to a walking track, four NHL-sized rinks, three meeting rooms, a concession stand, and a store, the Gale Centre is an impressive facility. What makes it even better? Definitely the fact it’s also home to the fifth and smallest) branch of the Niagara Falls Public Library.

Affectionately known as the NovelBranch and located beside the ATM, the Gale Centre branch is made up of a bright green vending machine that contains a plethora of incredible books and magazines. There are books for adults, teens, and children and there’s a great variety of topics, genres, and authors from which to choose. We also update the books in the NovelBranch regularly so you always have something current and new to read.

To access the vending machine, you need an active Niagara Falls library card and you need to know your four-digit PIN. Using the machine is easy. You just need to scan your card, enter your PIN, open the door, take out the books you want to read, shut the door, and take your receipt.

As of this summer, you can borrow all of the books and magazines in the NovelBranch for up to three weeks. When you’re done, simply put the books back in the machine; non-NovelBranch material can go in the dropbox. You’ll be able to distinguish what books need to go back in the NovelBranch from books at our other branches because all NovelBranch books have a translucent yellow, red, blue, or green sticker on the spine. You won’t find any library staff at the Gale Centre on a constant basis, so if you have questions while you’re there, please call 905-356-8080 and someone will be glad to lend a hand.

The Niagara Falls Public Library is proud to offer innovative information and entertainment solutions like the NovelBranch. So next time you’re in the arena, stop by the NovelBranch to pick up a good read!
