Female author series returns to Secord Homestead

Niagara Parks will bring its Literary Speaker Series back to the Laura Secord Homestead next month.

Again, four Canadian female authors will speak at the homestead in Queenston starting Sept. 13 with Metis writer Maia Caron. Her novel “Song of Batoche” was ranked No. 11 on CBC’s list of must-read books of 2017, and was chosen by Raven Reads as a 2018 Read for Reconcilia­tion.

She speaks from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

On Oct. 11 will be

Suzette Mayr, whose fourth novel

“Monoceros” was shortliste­d for the

2011 Giller Prize. She teaches creative writing at the University of Calgary.

On Nov. 8 will be South Korea immigrant Ann Y.K. Choi, whose novel “Kay’s Lucky Coin Variety” was chosen by CBC Books as one of 2012’s best Canadian debut books. Her first children’s book, “Once Upon an Hour,” is slated for release in 2020.

The series concludes Dec. 13 with Michelle Winters, shortliste­d for the 2017 Giller Prize for her debut novel “I Am a Truck.” The Saint John, N.B., writer and painter has appeared in THIS Magazine, Taddle Creek, Matrix and Dragnet.
