The Niagara Falls Review

Lego Robotics back by popular demand

- BECKY DIXON Becky Dixon is community development and programming librarian for Niagara Falls Public Library

September is an exciting time of year, and Niagara Falls Public Library is ready to celebrate with fun programs and events. Be sure to pick up our fall 2018 magazine to learn about all the exciting programs and events happening this fall.

Science Literacy Week is Sept. 17 to 23. We are celebrating with libraries and other educational institutions and museums across the country. Visit our website for more information on our science literacy fun such as Ooey Gooey Science, Science Storytime and our I Survived the Library programs.

We also have Phil Gebhardt of the Niagara Peninsula Amateur Radio Club joining us Saturday, Sept. 22. He will show us how to build a radio receiver.

We also have some great volunteer opportunities for our teen customers. We’re always on the lookout for social media-savvy teens for our Instagram Street Team. Earn community involvement hours by helping spread the word about library events and services through Instagram.

Or if you like working with children, enjoy reading, and want to help emerging readers, volunteer for our Reading Buddies program. Volunteers will mentor children in grades 1 to 4 with reading practice, literacybased activities and fun. For more information and to volunteer, email programming@nflibrary.ca.

Book club registration will open on Tuesday, Sept. 4, for our nine different book clubs. Book Clubs are a great way to meet people who share your passion for reading, and to discover new titles and authors you may not have otherwise opened. Our groups meet once a month from October to May for lively discussion.

New this year! Join us for Beer and Books — a book club for millennials. Find out what’s on tap for good book buzz. Or don’t have time for a book club every month? Join us month by month for a great read with our One Book at a Time Club. Registration is ongoing, on a monthly basis. Registration can be done online, by phone or in person at any library location.

Don’t miss out on our Saturdays at the library. Join us for Dancing to the Beat Kids’ Dance Party on Sept. 8 at Victoria Avenue or for Family Fort Fun on Sept. 15 at the Chippawa library. Our Lego Robotics is back by popular demand on Sept. 9 at Stamford Centre and on Sept. 22 at Victoria Avenue.

In September, the Community Centre Library is open 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sundays. Get some slippery, sticky, hands-on experience with our Sensory Play Sunday program on Sept. 30 or join us for a half-hour of singing, playing and reading with our Drop-In Storytime on Sept. 23.

For more information on these and other exciting programs and events, you can pick up our magazine “What’s On at NFPL,” available at all library locations. Make sure to check our website at my.nflibrary.ca, Like us on Facebook or Follow us on Twitter and Instagram.
