Bowlers already in the groove

- JEFF STEVENS Special to St. Catharines Standard

Usually the beginning of the Niagara 5-Pin Mixed Pro League season is where most bowlers shake off the rust of being away from the lanes for the summer and work on getting their groove back. Both Paul Asselin and Dave Pendlebury are shining examples of those bowlers who don’t take very long to shake that rust off when the season starts, and they proved this fact by sparking the Dale Mellway Life Insurance Magic to a 3-0 blanking of the Reggie’s Renovations Inc. Hammerheads.

The two Niagara 5-pin hall of famers tossed the best individual sets of the night, Asselin with a sparkling 778 (230, 288, 260) and Pendlebury right behind with a stellar 771 (250, 214, 307).

Brad Gaudreau rounded things out for the winners rolling a steady 664 (286).

Replying for the Hammerheads was Jordan Terrym who shot 549 (207).

In other matches, the Oh Canada Eh Dinner Show Canucks whitewashed the Wine Place Whiners 3-0 on the strength of Matt Vendittelli’s solid 689 (240, 245) and reigning ladies high average champ Chantal Papineau’s 659 (263).

Jeff Stevens answered for the Whiners with 656 (228, 273).

Chris Disher got out of the gate quickly as he fired 759 (274, 291) to lead the Scorecard Harry’s Half Pints to a 2-1 win over the Ontario Street Boston Pizza Brutes.

Disher was helped along by rookie Shaun Feere’s 684 (261, 242) and Kayla Ferguson who checked in with 624 (250, 211).

The Brutes shot back with Tim Dixon, who rolled 718 (218, 219, 281), and rookie Jordan Gravelle, who got off to a fast start with an even 700 (293, 210) set.

In the night’s final match the Oh Canada Eh Dinner Show Town Criers took two of three from the Lakeside Electrical Lightning.

Rookie Kile Robins took the reins for the winners firing 697 (280, 207, 210), while getting help from Rob Fisher’s 637 (210, 237) and rookie Brad Maurice’s 625 (219, 207).

The Lightning replied with reigning men’s high average champ Tyler Wendel’s 687 (244, 235, 208), while fJohn Wendel backed up his son with 641 (209, 248).
