Maple Leafs to visit Mary Ward Catholic school Friday
This week’s Toronto Maple Leafs training camp in Niagara Falls will include a visit to Mary Ward Catholic school Friday.
Members of the team will be at the school at 1:50 p.m., shortly after their first practice at the Gale Centre wraps up.
The team will celebrate students participating in the Future Goals — Hockey Scholar learning course, a web-based initiative that leverages hockey to teach math and science concepts.
Current players will spend an hour at the school on Dorchester Road for the launch event.
It’s part of a busy weekend for the team as it holds its training camp in Niagara Falls for the second straight year. Two years ago the NHL team held a summer development camp in Niagara Falls. The team has already announced it will support the Niagara Children’s Centre with entry donations to its Saturday and Sunday practices.
Scrimmages and practices run from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday to Sunday. The annual Leafs Alumni Game (versus Canadian Forces Base Borden) will be Saturday at 7 p.m. with former players Wendel Clark, Darcy Tucker and Al Iafrate expected to take part. Darryl Sitler and Curtis Joseph will be the special team coaches.
An outdoor barbecue will be held Sunday in the Gale Centre parking lot starting at 12:30 p.m.
Tickets to all events are free (with a suggested $5 entry donation) on a first come first served basis outside the Gale Centre starting at 8:30 a.m. each day.
