College students overcrowding transit

-

I would like to express concern with the growing number of students that are being pushed upon us by Niagara College.

The college knows that international students must pay higher tuition to attend, therefore they are a goldmine. When I started at the college seven years ago, there were not too many of them but towards the end of my studies it was becoming difficult to get on the provided buses as these students are clearly not familiar with Canadian customs and etiquette.

In the past year, it is beginning to happen with the city buses. I have boarded several buses that have been completely full.

This morning I left extra early to get to the transit hub before my bus got too busy, it was half full thankfully. When I got to the hub I sat a on a bench and waited for my bus — during this wait another bus arrived (a long bendy one) and a stream of college students poured out and raced to be first in line for the college bus.

In this chaos, my phone was almost knocked out of my hand and I was nearly pushed off the bench no less than three times.

None of these students glanced back or apologized, if I was elderly or disabled then I could have been hurt.

I have been asking the college for years to fix this issue, but it is too profitable. I think they should cap the intake of students or start paying subsidies to the host cities to cover extra buses.

I invite anyone to go the Morrison/Dorchester hub in Niagara Falls between 6:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. on a weekday and witness mass human movement first-hand. Peter Murray,
