Soccer top kicks take a bow

-

A defender who is back on the back-line following a one-year hiatus is Niagara College’s top female athlete for the week ending Sunday.

Chelsea Hay, a sophomore from Ottawa majoring in the fitness and health promotion program, has been a steadying force on defence since returning to the Knights lineup. She turned aside the Redeemer attack before it had a chance to start in a 2-1 victory over the visiting Royals.

Hay also showcased her offensive skills as Niagara won its fourth in a row and improved to

6-2. A 70-yard, straightforward run nearly culminated in a second-half goal for the Knights.

“She (Hay), Lauren Frasca and Maddy Harley turned in solid performances in a winning effort to maintain our hold on second place,” head coach Rob Lalama said.

The Knights are in London, Ont., today for a 4 p.m. kickoff against the 8-0 Fanshawe Falcons.

Niagara is hoping to avenge a 3-1 loss to the Falcons in the opening game of the season series.

St. Catharines native and Governor Simcoe graduate Oti Frigole earned male athlete of the week honours for a three-goal performance in a 4-0 victory over Redeemer.

The hat trick gave the first-year social services student nine goals on the season, surpassing the rookie record of eight netted by Matt Miedema during the 2009 season.

First place in the West Division was on the line Tuesday when Niagara, 6-1-1, played in a road game against Fanshawe, 7-0-1.

Fanshawe opened the home-andhome, season series with a 3-0 victory Sept. 19 in Welland.
