Countdown’s on to election — and removal of signs

Results expected quickly after polls close Monday at 8 p.m.

- GORD HOWARD

After a long campaign, we’re down to counting the hours until municipal election day on Monday.

Polls are open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and results are expected to start coming in within minutes after voting ends.

Anyone trying to follow the local races from home can visit the city’s website NiagaraFalls.ca and after 8 p.m., be immediately directed to a page showing incoming results.

In Niagara Falls, there are 61 names on the ballot for seats on city council, the two school boards and regional council. There are 61,095 potential voters in the city.

Note to voters

Anyone who did not receive a voter notification card in the mail can phone the clerk’s department at city hall — 905-3567521 — to learn where they can go to vote.

It isn’t necessary to have a card with you at the polling station. However, all voters will need to show proof of identity with their address. A driver’s licence is ideal.

The accessible audio voting system, for people who require assistance to vote due to a disability, remains open in the clerk’s department through election day.

Signs, everywhere a sign

The city is infested with candidates’ campaign signs — check out Portage Road between Chippawa and Marineland, or the intersection at Dorchester and Thorold Stone roads.

Their very existence has been the subject of much debate on social media, with opinion generally leaning toward finding some way to ban them. A few candidates have refused to post them, citing their concern for the environment.

You can relax — they should be gone soon. City bylaws state candidates must remove their signs within two days of voting day, or the end of the day Oct. 24.

After that, if city workers have to pick up any signs the candidates will be billed $50 apiece to get them back. Many of the candidates plan to run again in four years, so that’s their incentive to clean up.
