Badgers take advantage of ‘hoopspital­ity’

Brock sweeps Laurentian, Nipissing in men’s and women’s basketball

Brock basketball enjoyed a winning weekend on a road trip to Northern Ontario.

Victories on back-to-back nights over Laurentian, 102-88; and Nipissing, 79-51; improved the men’s team to a West Division-leading 4-1, while the wins at Laurentian, 75-60; and Nipissing, 73-56; improved the women’s team to 2-3.

Johneil Simpson, with 29 points, five rebounds; Daniel Cayer, 25 points, 10 rebounds; Cassidy Ryan, 20 points, six rebounds; and Tyler Brown, 14 points, 13 assists; were key contributo­rs in Brock in the victory over Laurentian.

“It was a tough road game, they stuck together throughout the whole game,” head coach Madhav Trivedi said.

“There were times where Laurentian brought it to within one point, but our guys followed the game plan and really stuck to it in the offensive end.”

Standouts for the Badgers against Nipissing were Simpson, 25 points; Ryan, 17 points, six rebounds; and Daniel Cayer, eight points, eight rebounds.

Melissa Tatti, 21 points; Sofia Croce, 18 in 20 minutes of playing time; Baelie, Campbell, 12; and Kristin Gallant, 10; scored in double digits as the women’s team snapped a three-game losing streak in the win over Laurentian.

“It was a great defensive effort, our bench players really came in and gave us some valuable minutes,” head coach Mike Rao said. “We rebounded well late both offensivel­y and defensivel­y. “I loved our effort and fight.” Tatti, 27 points; Meagan Charbonnea­u, 10 points; Maddy Gojmerac,

nine points, nine rebounds; Campbell, seven points, 10 rebounds; and Gallant, seven points; were the big guns in Rao’s arsenal versus Nipissing.

Brock hosts the Toronto Varsity Blues on Friday at Bob Davis Gymnasium and the Ryerson Rams on Saturday at Meridian Centre in downtown St. Catharines.

Tipoff for both doublehead­er games are women’s, 6 p.m.; men’s, 8 p.m.

Title lost in OT

Brock’s hopes for a 19th Canadian men’s university field lacrosse championsh­ip and first since 2009 fell one goal short.

The Badgers were 58 seconds away from winning Sunday’s national final at Varsity Stadium in Toronto when two-time defending champion Western sent the game into overtime.

The Mustangs, were trailed early in the second quarter and

were down 8-6 with two minutes remaining in regulation, beat Brock goalkeeper Josh Wood 32 seconds into overtime to complete the comeback.

Connor Ham, with three goals; Campbell Parker, two; Connor Brown, Tyrus Rehanek and Kurtis Woodland found the back of the net for Brock in the loss.

Each team had 22 shots on goal. Woodland, five goals; Parker, two; Jordan Gillis, Grayson Houghton, Brown, Ham and Rehanek

provided the offence the day before in a 12-11 defeat of the Trent Excalibur in the semifinals, also at Varsity Stadium.

Brock advanced to the final four at the Baggataway Cup championsh­ips by sinking the Nipissing Lakers 18-4 on goals from Brown, four; Parker, three; Sam Leclair, Alex Pace, two apiece; Latrell Harris, Mitchell Mackenzie, Saul van der Zalm, Houghton and Woodland.

Brock and Western finished league play with 9-1 records.

Mr. Zeroes

Brock teams combined to earn seven of a possible 10 points in university hockey on the weekend.

Logan Thompson and Mario Cavaliere took turns playing Mr. Zero backstoppi­ng the men’s team to shutout victories over Toronto, 2-0; and Windsor, 4-0.

The Brock women had to work overtime for their two points against Laurentian, 3-2 win in a shootout; and one point in a 2-1 overtime loss to Windsor.

Thompson made 26 saves, Ethan Spaxman and Cosimo Fontana each scored a goal, and Brock blanked Toronto on the road in men’s hockey.

“We were doing everything tonight: timely saves, outstandin­g goaltendin­g,” head coach Marty Williamson said.

“Very solid team defence, and our penalty kill was good.”

Cavaliere made 32 saves, Dexter Weber, Tyler Rollo, Brandon O’Quinn and Brody Silk each scored a goal as the Badgers beat visiting Windsor for their win in a row to improve to 8-3.

Brock hosts Waterloo, 2-10; in a 7:15 p.m. faceoff Friday at Seymour-Hannah Sports and Entertainm­ent Centre.

Goals from Annie Berg, Cassidy Maplethorp­e in regulation and Maplethorp­e and Maggie SprattMall­ick gave Brock a come-frombehind win over Laurentian in women’s hockey.

“We didn’t decide to play until the third period,” head coach Margot Page said. “We never gave up and I liked our compete level in the third.”

Spratt-Mallick scored for Brock in the overtime loss to Windsor.

The Badgers, 3-1-2; are back at Seymour-Hannah for a 2:15 p.m. puck drop Saturday against Western.

Welcome to the mat

A Brock wrestling team that graduated seven starters opened the season by placing first at the McMaster Open and third at Simon Fraser University Internatio­nal Open.

In Hamilton, Kristina McLaren, 51 kilograms; Darrion Sterling, 72 kg; and Clayton Pye, 90 kg; placed first in their respective weight classes.

Garette Saunders, 57kg; Tejvir Boal, 90 kg; and Richard Deschatele­ts, 100 kg; had second-place finishes in the men’s flight. Sam Ramano was second among women’s in the 48 kg class.

At Simon Fraser in Burnaby, B.C., Hannah Taylor, 57 kg; and Sklar Grote, 65 kg; had secondplac­e finishes for the Brock women. Ty Bridgewate­r, 74 kg; was third for the men.

Both Brock teams are ranked fourth in Canada.

“We are a hard-working team,” head coach Marty Calder said. “We don’t fear failure, but rather chase down our dreams in hopes of achieving success at the highest level. That can’t be stressed enough.”

Brock wrestlers will be in Toronto on Saturday competing in the York Open.

Sweep in women’s V-ball

Brock improved to 3-3 in women’s volleyball with home-court victories over the Royal Military Academy Paladins — 25-14, 25-17, 25-17 — and the Queen’s Golden Gaels — 25-23, 18-25, 25-21, 29-17.

The Badgers settled for a split on the men’s side with a victory over the Paladins — 25-18, 25-17, 25-16 — and a five-set loss to the Golden Gaels — 19-25, 17-25, 25-17, 25-20, 15-8.

Brock puts its 1-5 record on the line 6 p.m. Sunday in Peterborou­gh against the Trent Excalibur. Women’s action gets underway two hours earlier.
