Alex Vendette earned accolades for a star turn in the big picture, but it was Bailey Stumpo receiving a victory lap for a cameo appearance in a snapshot.

While Vendette kept the Welland Jr. Canadians in the game stopping 44 of 45 shots, it was Stumpo who kept the Thorold Blackhawks in the win column.

His goal 2:44 into the first overtime gave the hosts a 2-1 victory in Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League action Thursday night at Thorold Community Arena.

Thorold’s fourth win in a row improved the junior B team’s record to 10-11-1.

Welland fell to 6-15-0-2 overall in the Golden Horseshoe Conference and to 1-3 versus the Blackhawks.

Thorold outshot the Jr. Canadians 46-29 and went 1-for-6 on the power play. Welland finished the game 1-for-3 with a man advantage.

The ’Hawks’ Dylan Latty broke a scoreless tie 6:04 into the third period with a power-play goal into an empty net.

Matt Baumann’s power-play marker for Welland thwarted Anthony Tremonte’s shutout bid and forced overtime with 3:19 remaining in regulation.

Thorold returns to the ice 7:07 p.m. Saturday in a home game against the Niagara Falls Canucks. The Blackhawks are in Welland the following night for a 7:05 faceoff at the main arena.
