LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

-

Go away Mr. Annunziata, writes reader RE: WAR OF WORDS BREAKS OUT BETWEEN CAMPION, NPCA CHAIR, NOV. 29

To Sandy Annunziata: The only theatrics are on your part.

You were appointed by Niagara Region to the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority board, and your term was basically over on Oct. 22 when the people said they no longer wanted you.

As this order in council has never been used, not even to appoint you, and was written so long ago another piece of legislation could override it.

But the bottom line is you are disrupting the political scene of Niagara for your own pleasure and not for the citizens of Niagara.

As they say, go quietly into the night and never let us hear from you again.

End the Short Hills hunt

As a person of Indigenous descent, I am writing to request an end to the hunt in Short Hills Provincial Park. Until 2013, this area was an oasis of protection for wildlife and should be reinstated as such.

In my opinion, the “tradition” excuse is being used as a guise to injure and kill innocent, unsuspecting animals. Hunting may have been necessary for survival many years ago but that is not the case today. I am all for keeping up traditions of one’s heritage as long as they are ethical, respectful to others and peaceful. Hunting is outdated, reckless, inhumane and cruel.

I am also concerned about the damage to the eco-system/damage to the park trails, trees and vegetation, government expenditure/cost to Ontario taxpayers (staffing the park and assistance with the hunt) as well as public safety, as there have been reports of the general public being in the area during the hunts.

In closing, I am urging you to end the hunt in Short Hills and other provincial parks and return these areas to the original oases of protection for wildlife.

Newspaper commended

I am a longtime subscriber to The St. Catharines Standard. I would like to commend you, the management and your staff, for a job well done.

I have not enjoyed reading the newspaper as much in a long while. Your coverage of local events has not been as extensive and this informative since the days when the Burgoyne family owned and ran the paper. Your coverage of national and world news is excellent. Kudos for a job well done and keep up the good work.

Anyone I have spoken to who reads The Standard seems to feel the same way. I have yet to get a negative comment whenever I mention how great the paper has become.

I hope you will pass this letter on to your co-workers … great job.

‘Exceptional’ hospital experience

On Nov. 22, after an experience with a chainsaw, a ladder and a tree branch, I found myself in the emergency of St. Catharines hospital.

I was immediately assessed with the help of a CT scan and a group of knowledgeable doctors and taken to the trauma centre of Hamilton General. I was again assessed as to what was to be done and not done to speed my recovery. No surgery was deemed necessary.

Nurses took over. They were a group of compassionate, caring, warm individuals whose only concern was my well-being. I was treated with respect and attentive care. My care was followed up with physio, and I was assessed daily by doctors who took time to explain my recovery procedures.

The hospitals were clean and well-maintained. The food was nourishing, appealing, tasteful and plentiful.

Except for falling off a ladder, my experience this past week has been a good one thanks to my family and the exceptional care I received at both St. Catharines and Hamilton General. May you all know how appreciated you are. Merry Christmas. Larry Moore Sr.
