Niagara IceDogs forward Philip Tomasino is Alberta bound.

The sophomore forward and the team’s first-round selection in the 2017 Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection is among 40 players chosen to compete in a showcase Wednesday, Jan. 23, in Red Deer.

Goal of the 2019 Sherwin-Williams CHL/ NHL Top Prospects Game is to promote players eligible to be taken in next year’s NHL Draft.

Players for the 24th annual showcase were chosen by NHL teams and include prospects from the host Western Hockey League, as well as from the Ontario Hockey League and the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

NHL Central Scouting director Dan Marr said the prospects game gives generals and scouts the chance to evaluate players on their radar in a “best-on-best showcase.”

“All 31 NHL clubs contributed to the roster selection and have a great interest in this priority scouting event.”

Tomasino is on track to double his offensive output from his rookie season in the OHL. The 17-year-old from Mississauga already had 11 goals,15 assists for 26 points in 29 games heading into last night action against the Hamilton Bulldogs.

In his first season, the 6-foot-1, 180-pound, right-shooting centre had five goals, 19 assists for 24 points in 61 games. Tomasino has earned at least a point in all but five of the team’s last 18 games.
