Win in western New York lifts Thorold over .500

Blackhawks resume season series versus St. Catharines; Hamilton hosts Jr. Canadians

Junior B hockey’s Battle of Burleigh Hill resumed Thursday night with host the Thorold Blackhawks hoping to win their first skirmish of the season in head-to-head play versus the St. Catharines Falcons.

St. Catharines entered the third meeting in the series leading two games to none and seeking to extend its streak of earning at least a point to 21 games.

Last loss in regulation for the Falcons, 19-3-0-2; was Sept. 24 when they dropped a 4-2 decision to the Hamilton Kilty B’s on the road.

Thorold, meanwhile, returned to the ice seeking its third straight win and sixth victory in the last nine games.

A 7-4 victory over the Lockport Regals Wednesday night in western New York moved the Blackhawks one game above .500.

Bailey Stumpo, with three goals and an assist; Owen Allan, Dylan Latty, Alex Mourani, Jacob Mastrangel­o found the back of the net for Thorold, which improved to 13-12-1-1.

Replying with goals for the Regals, 3-24-1-0; were A.J. Marinelli, two; Brendan Murray, Anthony Trigilio.

Shots on net were 28-27 Lockport.

The Blackhawks finished the game 0-for-3 on the power play; the Regals, 2-for-8.

Anthony Tremonte earned the victory between the pipes for Thorold.

Anthony Santarosa, who surrendere­d four goals on seven shots, was tagged with the loss. Chase Clark stopped 17 of 19 shots the rest of the way.

Other Thursday night action in the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League’s Golden Horseshoe Conference had Hamilton, 17-90-1; completing a home-andhome series against the visiting Welland Jr. Canadians, 7-17-0-2. Welland skated to a 2-1, home-ice victory Sunday night.

On deck Friday night are the Fort Erie Meteors, 8-17-0-2; at Niagara Falls Canucks, 23-3-0-1; St. Catharines hosting Lockport in a 7 p.m. puck drop at Jack Gatecliff Arena.
