Welland’s Music Depot school is bringing its students back in time.

Nearly 20 performers with the music school will put a young-ish spin on some old time rock and roll for ’50s Revival at Seneca Queen Theatre in Niagara Falls Feb. 24.

“The students were not familiar with this genre of music when we started introducing it to them in 2017, but now they sound like pros,” says Music Depot co-founder Morgan Mitchell. “They had a lot of fun making their own arrangements and putting their own spin on these classic rock and roll songs.”

The revue will feature kids aged nine to 19 performing tunes by Buddy Holly, Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis and other giants of the era. The show is a fundraiser for an upcoming performance at Disney World in August, adds Mitchell.

“All proceeds from ticket sales and sponsorship go directly to the students’ travel costs.

“We chose to teach them how to perform ’50s music because of the impressive harmonies, guitar solos and overall energy of the music.”

It was their adeptness at the oldies that caught Disney’s attention.

“After watching them perform their Modern Oldies show for a year and continue to grow into amazing young musicians, we sent an audition tape to Disney World back in July, 2018,” says Whelan. “They were immediately accepted to perform at Magic Kingdom in August.”
