Maves, Jeffs, McShane appointed to parks, bridge commissions

-

Two former regional councillors have been appointed two local commissions, along with a would-be politician from Niagara Falls.

Bart Maves, a former Niagara Falls councillor, has been appointed to the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission, along with Chuck McShane, who ran for the Progressive Conservatives in the last provincial election and as a regional councillor for Niagaraon-the-Lake in October. McShane lost both elections.

April Jeffs, former mayor of Wainfleet, was appointed to the Niagara Parks Commission.

All three appointments were made official on Jan. 31 by the Progressive Conservative government.

They will each serve a threeyear term.

Neither Maves nor Jeffs ran for re-election in last October’s elections. Jeffs is the Conservative candidate for Niagara Centre riding in this fall’s federal election.

Jeffs will join St. Catharines regional Coun. Sandie Bellows, who was named parks commission chair by the province earlier this month.

The province appoints eight of the 12 seats on the Niagara Parks Commission board, including chair and vice-chair. The remaining four positions are appointed by Niagara Region and the municipalities of Niagara Falls, Fort Erie and Niagara-onthe-Lake — all communities which include Niagara Parks property.

The bridge commission is a joint Canada-U.S. board responsible for the Whirlpool Rapids and Lewiston-Queenston bridges with the Canadian appointments made by Queen’s Park.
