Falcons win ‘road game’ on home ice

Jr. B hockey season wraps up Sunday

- BERND FRANKE Regional Sports Editor

There were no border delays when the St. Catharines Falcons “visited” the Lockport Regals in western New York.

That’s because the Falcons never left home Tuesday night for the “road” game against the only U.S. team in the

Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League.

After it became apparent Lockport would not be able to get ice time on their side of the border, Jack Gatecliff Arena pitched in and served as the Regals’ home away from home for the Jr. B game.

Other than the change of venue, everything else pretty much went as expected. St. Catharines, one of the top teams in the league, had little trouble handling cellar-dwelling Lockport.

Xavier Drummond and Christian Girhiny each collected a hat trick as the Falcons skated to an 8-1 victory.

Carson Edwardson and Noah Solinger also scored for

St. Catharines.

Jack McGovern earned the victory in net for the Falcons who outshot Lockport 54-29.

Nolan Slachetka scored for the Regals, 7-37-1-0.

St. Catharines went 0-for-2 in the power play; Lockport, 1-for-5.

St. Catharines improved to 38-6-0-2 overtaking the Niagara Falls Canucks, 38-6-0-1, for first place in the Golden Horseshoe Conference.

Niagara Falls has a game in hand and closes out the regular season with games against the Pelham Panthers, Lockport and Welland Jr. Canadians.

The Falcons host the Hamilton Kilty B’s Friday night and wrap up league play Sunday afternoon at Pelham.

On Wednesday night, the Regals were scheduled to host the Thorold Blackhawks.

This time for real, weather permitting. Also on the Golden Horseshoe schedule Wednesday night was the Fort Erie Meteors at Welland.

Thursday night action has Thorold hosting Lockport.

The 48-game season wraps up Sunday. All eight teams in the Golden Horseshoe Conference make the playoffs.
