Police arrest man in Pelham after 4-hour standoff
Aman was taken into custody following a four-hour standoff in Pelham on Saturday night jn which a firearm was allegedly discharged in the direction of police.
When officers arrived, they encountered a male barricaded with weapons inside the home.
Members of the Niagara Regional Police emergency task unit, negotiators, canine unit, 3 District criminal investigations branch, traffic enforcement as well as uniform members from across the region were brought in to contain and resolve the situation while residents in nearby homes were moved to safety or sheltered in place.
During the incident, a weapon was fired at responding officers, the NRP said in a release.
While the standoff was ongoing, police declined to say if weapons were involved.
“That’s not something we would be able to speak to at this time as this is an ongoing investigation,” a spokesperson told media in the parking lot of Food Basics on Highway 20.
Following lengthy negotiations, at approximately 11:40 p.m., a male was taken into custody without incident.
No injuries were sustained during the affair, according to police.
Michael Roosma, 29, of Pelham, is facing charges of pointing a firearm, uttering death threats/ bodily harm, possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose and two counts of discharging a firearm with intent.
Roosma was being held in custody pending a bail hearing via video Sunday at the John Sopinka Courthouse in Hamilton.
Moments before an arrest had been confirmed, at about 11:30 p.m., police could be heard from the intersection of Bacon Lane and Pelham Street telling the suspect to “get on the ground.”
Police were focused on one male in what NRP spokesperson Stephanie Sabourin called a “dynamic situation.”
The home was surrounded from 7:30 p.m. until the time of the arrest.
People who fled their homes were told it was safe to return at about 12:15 a.m.
Pelham Street between Bacon Lane and Spruceside Crescent reopened after midnight.
Sabourin said on Sunday that two firearms were seized.
