Diversity to take centre stage at Music Niagara Festival

- SATBIR SINGH

The Music Niagara Festival will feature a diverse group of musicians when performers take to the stage.

From July 14 to Aug. 10, the festival will feature 29 concerts at multiple venues throughout Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Atis Bankas, founder and artistic director of the festival, takes pride in the variety of genres this year.

“Majority of the lineup is Canadian, but there’s a very good international component,” said Bankas.

Classical, jazz, choral, pop, a cappella and country are among the genres highlighted this 21st year.

International talent for the festival will be coming from Holland, France, Czech Republic and Mexico.

“This season’s diverse programming was conceived with the intention for our audiences to experience the musicianship and artistry of our great performers, while enjoying the stimulating sounds at unique venues,” said Bankas.

Canadian a cappella group Countermeasure, well-known internationally, will be the opening performance on July 14 at St. Mark’s Church on Byron Street.

This will be the sixth year students from the Music Niagara Performance Academy will showcase their classical talent with multiple performances. The three shows by the academy will be pay-what-you-can admission, with proceeds going to the school. Students attending the academy are given the chance to further their careers at both a national and international level.
