Helping Small Dogs Live Big Dreams

-

Texas Chihuahua Rescue Canada is a grass roots organization working in partnership with our parent rescue based in San Antonio, Texas. Once a month, our transport van makes the nearly 2700 km trek from San Antonio to Hamilton, Ontario. On board each month are approximately 30 little chihuahua and chihuahua mixes heading to their forever homes in Canada.

Why dogs from Texas you may ask? Don’t we have enough dogs in Canada needing a home? In fact, it can be difficult to find a small breed dog available for adoption in Canadian shelters. The majority of adoptable dogs in Canada are medium or large breeds. Small dogs serve a very special group of individuals. They are excellent companion dogs for seniors, those with anxiety or mental health disorders and even people with limited mobility. They are a great lap dog and, while they do still require exercise, it’s not nearly as much as a larger breed. Small dogs don’t take up much space so they’re great for those living in apartments. They also make great travel companions!

The need to save animals in Texas is staggering, Due to overbreeding and irresponsible pet ownership, Chihuahuas are the 2nd most euthanized breed. Texas Chihuahua Rescue receives no government funding and exists solely on the generosity of those who make donations. In 2018 we saved over 750 lives and are well on target to save at least 800 this year.

Adoption events are held monthly at the Knights of Columbus Hall located at 222 Queenston Road in Hamilton. All dogs arrive in Canada spayed or neutered, up to date on vaccinations, current on flea, tick and heart worm prevention, and microchipped. Adoption fees are $500 for adults and $600 for puppies under 8 months old.
