Striking out stigma around mental health

Charity baseball game to be played in Welland

- THE WELLAND TRIBUNE

A charity baseball game between the Welland Chiefs and Merritton Alliance aims to Strike Out Stigma around mental illness while benefiting the Niagara Branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association.

Welland Chiefs’ Steve Maurice and Jennifer Richards organized the game, now in its fourth year, which takes place Wednesday, July 10 at Welland Stadium on Quaker Road.

In addition to helping reduce the stigma surrounding mental illnesses and increase support for local mental health initiatives, the pair are hoping to raise at least $10,000 to support mental wellness in Niagara.

“We want to make sure that whatever services are needed are there for the people seeking them out,” said Richards, the Strike Out Stigma co-chair, in a release.

Players from the Welland Chiefs and Merritton Alliance are collecting pledges to participate in the game.

“We can’t thank Strike Out Stigma’s organizers enough for hosting this event to raise funds and bring awareness to mental health in our community,” said Tara McKendrick, Canadian Mental Health Association Niagara executive director.

“One in 5 Canadians will experience a mental health concern and the other 4 will provide support and care-giving. This event allows us to meet people, talk with them about their experiences and direct them to where to go for help,” she said.

The release said the game is a great way to spend time with family and friends while supporting a good cause. Activities and baseball game night giveaways will be held throughout the evening. Welland Jackfish mascot, Jacques, will also be in attendance to meet and greet fans.

Gates open at 6:30 p.m. with the game starting at 7:30 p.m. and admission is free.
