Old Fort Erie to hit the target with axe-throwing
The art of axe-throwing will take centre stage at Niagara Parks’ Old Fort Erie next week as the national historic site opens its doors for a new event.
On Tuesday visitors to the fort will be invited to try their hand at axe-throwing as part of the Museum Meetup series organized by the Museums of Niagara Association. Members of the Backyard Axe Throwing League will be on site to offer instruction.
The licensed outdoor event runs 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Participants must be at least 16.
The Lakeshore Road fort will be open during the event and visitors are invited to learn about the British, First Nations and American soldiers and Niagara’s vital role during the War of 1812.
Members of the Museums of Niagara Association created Museum Meetups as a way to inspire local residents to rediscover their local museums.
“We wanted to give our audience something new and fresh,” said Sylvia Beben, events and programs facilitator with the Town of Lincoln.
“We decided to create a series of events and workshops that would appeal to a wide range of people. We hope this inspires Niagara to come out and see the great things we have to offer.”
Special themed events have been held each Tuesday in July at museums across the region.
“The idea behind the meetups was to garner more attention around museums to people who may not normally attend a museum,” said Travis Hill, site manager at Old Fort Erie.
“And, axe-throwing at a military fort, that’s a perfect fit.”
The final event — Booze and Clues Trivia Night — will be held July 30 at the Lincoln Museum and Cultural Centre. The event will challenge participants on booze history, pop culture, mixology, songs about alcohol and more.
