Miron captures junior tour event in St. Catharines

Area’s best young golfers tee it up as Niagara District season winds down

Megan Miron of Binbrook won a playoff over Payton Bennett of Stoney Creek in the Niagara District Golf Tour stop at St. Catharines Golf and Country Club Sunday.

Both shot six-over-par 78s in the girls’ under-19 division. Emily White of St. Catharines was 11 over with an 83. Mya Mackey of Grimsby shot an 89 to finish fourth. Sasha Baker of Dunnville finished fifth with a 90.

On the boys’ side, R.J. Derhodge of Niagara Falls shot three-under-par 69 to win the boys under-19 and under-17 boys division over Ethan Siebert of Beamsville, who shot an even-par 72. Matthew Martel of Fonthill was third with a four-over-par 76. Aiden Lopinski of St. Catharines was fourth with a 77, good for five-over-par. Jordyn Rowling shot a plus-seven 79.

The next stop on the junior tour is Monday, Aug. 19, at Beechwood Golf and Social Club in Niagara Falls.

In boys under-15 play, Isaiah Ellis of Smithville was the top finisher with a one-under-par 71. Sammy Rootes of St. Catharines was second with a plus-six 78 while John Kingdon of Grimsby was third with an 85 and Hudson Mielko of Grimsby was fourth with an 88.

Nathan Freure of Wellandpor­t, Christian Rotundo and Liam Kirk of Grimsby finished tied for fifth with 89s.

In boys under-13, Michael Martel shot an 81 to finish first. Levi Moyer of Lincoln was second with a 91, Ethan Baxter of Fonthill was Christian Baxter of Fonthill shot 93s. In boys’ under-11, Ben Julie shot an 80 to finish first.

Trent Clarke of St. Ann’s was second with a 90 while Lucas Sartor shot 102, Gavin Christie 105 and Emerson Salter 109.
