We all have role in promoting equality by speaking out
Niagara Region councillor taken aback by ‘hurtful’ online attack, April 30
I am writing on behalf of the Niagara Sexual Assault Centre in response to the hateful, misogynistic comments directed at St. Catharines regional Coun. Laura Ip by podcaster Jim Fannon.
The level of rage and vulgarity toward “radical feminist pigs,” is absolutely intolerable and misguided on so many levels.
The first issue I want to address is the meaning of feminism. A feminist is someone who believes in the equality of all genders — socially, economically and politically.
These beliefs are widely held by people of all genders, not just women.
At the sexual assault centre, we use a feminist approach to provide support for our clients. That means everyone, regardless of gender, will be treated equally with respect and dignity.
Recently, at Take Back the Night, an international event to end violence against women and children, the theme was leadership opportunities and barriers for women in workplaces. Unfortunately, successful and intelligent women like Ip are often the targets of sexual harassment and other bullying behaviours.
Like Ip, other female politicians at all levels of government have been targeted because of their gender and some fear for the safety of themselves and their family.
Sadly, Ip has said she may not seek re-election due to a pattern of personal attacks against her. That would be a tremendous loss for Niagara.
To combat misogyny and violence against women, I believe children need to learn from a young age about respect and acceptance of others, both at home and in classrooms.
As a public educator in schools across the region for almost two decades, I have seen positive changes in attitudes and behaviours regarding gender-based issues and stereotypes.
We all have a role to play in promoting equality between the sexes by speaking out when we hear comments like Fannon’s or witness disrespectful or abusive actions toward others.
