Forward Brice Cooke, the Niagara IceDogs’ third pick in the Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection, has committed to the team, signing a standard player agreement.

The six-foot-two, 180-pound left-winger, who was taken in the second round with the 33rd overall selection, joins centre Panos Fimis, picked in the first round, fifth overall, and defenceman Alec Leonard, a secondrounder, taken at No. 27, as picks from the April draft who have signed with the team.

Cooke, 16, of Orangeville scored 24 goals and collected 27 assists in 51 Greater Ontario Hockey League games. Along with Fimis, he helped lead the Toronto Jr. Canadiens to the league championship.

Toronto would have been the top seed from the GTHL in the Ontario Cup tournament had the final scouting showcase heading into the draft not been cancelled by COVID-19. Cooke, a strong skater who can maintain speed while changing directions, brings a lot to a team embarking on the second floor of a rebuild after going all-in for a Memorial Cup run. Utilizing a deceptive shot and offensive instincts, Cooke can make plays and score.

“This is a great fit for us on many different levels. Brice has a goal-scoring ability that is rare for his age, and was one of the premier goal scorers in the draft,” IceDogs GM Joey Burke said in announcing the signing.

“He combines size, smarts, and speed. He really is the total package,” Burke said.

A bonus for Niagara is the “great chemistry” Cooke already has with Fimis, his linemate with the Jr. Canadiens in the GTHL last season.

“This is a signing that will pay off for years to come,” Burke said.

With all recreational facilities, including arenas and gyms, shuttered to contain the spread of the deadly COVID-19 virus, Cooke is keeping fit working out by himself and shooting pucks at a net his basement.

“Just trying to make the most of this situation,” said Cooke, who likens his style of play to that of Buffalo Sabres captain Jack Eichel.

Cooke knows moving up to the OHL will be a big step up from minor midget.

“It will be a big difference, but it will be fun,” Cooke said.

“I’m really excited to commit to such an unbelievable organization,” he added.

“I can’t wait to get started in Niagara.”
