Drivers, start your engines, but don’t expect to race to a checkered flag at an auto racing track in Ontario any time soon.

Merrittville Speedway will be hosting a test-and-tune inspection, along with its first practice of the season, this weekend after the province started easing some restrictions to contain the spread of COVID-19.

Saturday’s “track day,” scheduled to begin with inspections at 3 p.m. followed by on-track practice three hours later, will follow “strict guidelines.” Race teams will be limited to five people, including the driver, to ensure the safety of staff and participants.

There also won’t be fans, and there won’t be any in the grandstand at the Thorold track until the Ontario government gives the green light to spectator sports. And, until fans are allowed back in the stands, there won’t be racing at the Dshaped, clay track.

“I don’t see any other way to do it. We just have to wait until the guidelines come out, so we’re allowed some fans,” said Merrittville co-owner Don Spiece.

This Saturday’s practice isn’t expected to be a one-shot deal.

“I think we’ll do a few practices until hopefully we’re allowed to race,” Spiece said.

All of the inspections will be conducted inside the track. In past years, some of the activities took place in the parking lot.

Drivers must register themselves and up to four crew members. Registration must be prepaid by e-transfer.

There will no concessions at the track, and no mingling will be allowed between race teams.

Drivers will be emailed instructions on waivers and protocols after they preregister.

More information is available online at the speedway’s website, merrittvillespeedway.com.

At least 30 race teams can be accommodated in the pit area while still maintaining physical distancing.

Teams from across the six regular racing classes are expected to take part. Merrittville’s divisions include 358 Modified, Sportsman, Hoosier Stock, Mod Lites, Mini Stock and 6cylinder.

COVID-19 has already resulted in the cancellation of the test-and-tune, originally set for April 11, as well as six race programs.
