IceDogs graduate named to AHL all-rookie team

Boston farmhand Studnicka leads the Providence Bruins in scoring

Jack Studnicka, who ended his four-year Ontario Hockey League career with the Niagara IceDogs, has made quite an impression in his first season competing at the profession­al level.

The 21-year-old from Tecumseh, Ont., east of Windsor, was named to the American Hockey League all-rookie team after leading the Providence, R.I., Bruins in scoring. He counted 23 goals and collected 26 assists in 60 appearance­s for the top farm team in the Boston Bruins organizati­on.

Studnicka, the Bruins’ second-round pick in the 2017 National Hockey League draft with the 53rd overall selection, scored seven short-handed goals, tying an AHL rookie record. The six-foot-two, 175pound, right-hand shot also saw action in the Boston lineup, getting an assist in his NHL debut.

He netted 80 goals and added 153 assists in 252 OHL games with the Oshawa Generals and the IceDogs. Studnicka averaged more than 1 1 ⁄ points per 2 game in Niagara with 24 goals and 25 assists in 30 games in league play. He added five goals and six assists in 11 playoff games for the IceDogs. Studnicka was one of two OHL graduates from the 2017 draft class to earn allrookie honours in the AHL.

Alex Formenton, a secondroun­d pick by the Ottawa Senators taken 47th overall, had 27 goals and 26 assists in 61 games for the Belleville, Ont., Senators.

Formenton’s one-time London Knights teammate, defenceman Joey Keane, had a combined nine goals and 28 assists in 49 games with the Hartford, Conn., Wolf Pack and nine contests with the Charlotte, N.C., Checkers. Originally a thirdround pick of the New York Rangers in the 2018 draft, 88th overall, Keane was traded to the Carolina Hurricanes organizati­on in February.
