Theatre company will go with Poe for radio show

Theatre Bacchus is performing some of Poe’s creepy classics for its radio series starting Oct. 24

No sooner did new Niagara company Theatre Bacchus launch in March than the pandemic sent the entire theatre industry into a tailspin.

The company was set to make its debut in May with a production of Peter Gordon’s spoof “Murdered to Death” at the London Born Wine Co. in Beamsville.

Until a permanent home was established, the pop-up theatre company planned to perform shows at other Niagara wineries and entertainment hubs.

But with venues still off the table, founder Lana Borsellino said the company will turn its attention to radio.

Anew show called “Theatre of the Wine” will debut Saturday, Oct. 24, with a Halloween-themed show, “An Evening with Poe.”

Several of Edgar Allen Poe’s classics will be performed as radio plays, with actors performing from the same studio while social distancing.

The 90-minute show can be heard via a link that costs $5. It will be available for one week after the broadcast.

On the night of the premiere, the cast will gather for a 30-minute podcast to discuss the life of Poe at 7:30 p.m. There will also be a 15minute Q&A with the actors following the show.

The show is in partnership with Harbour Estates Winery.

Named after the Roman god of wine and theatre, Theatre Bacchus was formed to pair wine and theatre in unique environments.

“We want to change the way our brand works,” said Borsellino. “We want the experience to begin as soon as you get out of your car.”

Tickets for the radio show can be purchased at www.theatrebacchus.com.
