Intense flames drove back Niagara Regional Police and members of the public as they attempted to rescue a man following a car crash Monday morning in Pelham.

Police, Welland Fire and Emergency Services, Pelham Fire Department and Niagara Emergency Medical Services were called to Webber Road near Murdoch Street at the Welland-Pelham border at about 7 a.m. for a serious crash involving two vehicles, with one on fire.

When officers arrived, they found members of the public attempting to rescue a driver trapped in black Pontiac Grand Prix that had overturned in a ditch.

Apolice news release said the car was on fire. Officers also tried to rescue the trapped man, but were unable to do so due to the intense flames.

The man died at the scene. An investigation found the Grand Prix had been westbound on Webber Road with a group of vehicles before the crash. It came to rest on its side on the north side of Webber Road, west of Murdoch Street.

Collision reconstruction unit members were trying to determine what caused the car to lose control and leave the road.

The driver of one of the other vehicles was arrested at the scene. Police are not releasing the person’s name at this time.

Detectives from the forensic services unit, Welland detective office and traffic enforcement unit are assisting in the investigation.

Webber Road was closed between South Pelham Road and Pihach Street, and Murdoch Street was closed at Chantler Road for a portion of the day as police investigated.

Police are asking witnesses or anyone with information to contact detectives at 905-688-4111 ext. 9265 or by email to Lisa. Kristensen @niagarapolice.ca.
