Colour and tradition part of annual poinsettia show at Floral Showhouse
With each passing week of the pandemic, Amy and Alan Roebuck have watched their Christmas plans fall apart this year.
No visiting. No gatherings. But they aren’t letting every tradition go in 2020. As they’ve done for 40 years, the Fort Erie couple headed down Niagara Parkway Sunday to take in the annual poinsettia show at the Floral Showhouse.
“This is a bright spot,” said Amy. “To come here and see all the beautiful flowers.”
The show, which started Friday, features more than 1,400 multi-coloured poinsettias on display. The 35 varieties include cyclamen, caladiums and orchids, to go along with a fullsize sleigh full of gifts and lights adorning the rafters.
This year’s kaleidoscopic show is called “Technicolour Christmas,” with the colours each having a special meaning. Red signifies Canada, yellow represents the regional ‘Crush the Curve’ initiative, blue supports health-care and frontline workers, purple shows solidarity with the tourism and hospitality industry and green promotes peace and mindfulness during the challenges of 2020.
The show also stretches outside, with illuminated displays
in the Artist Garden.
The Roebucks have a Floral Showhouse membership and visit every time a new display is installed. Most years they bring family and out-of-town visitors.
“Our children are now 31 to 41 and we’ve been coming since the oldest was 18 months old,” said Amy.
Added Alan: “To me, this is the best facility in the middle of the
winter for children.”
The showhouse is open 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday through Monday to coincide with the Winter Festival of Lights. It runs until Jan. 4.
