Singer-songwriter talks fashion as well as her onstage look during recent tour stop
Q How would you describe your personal style?
Moody. My style changes from one day to the next. It really all depends on what side of the bed I wake up on.
Q What are the three most worn pieces in your wardrobe?
An oversized T-shirt, sweat pants and sneakers.
Q Does your fashion mirror your music style — which has a lot of sass and attitude — or do you play it safe with fashion?
I guess the best way to describe myself, and my personal style, is that I don’t like to be generalized and put in one singular box. In music, I’m not just one thing and the same can be said for my sense of fashion.
Q You’re currently on tour with Nicki Minaj on the Pinkprint Tour, which is why you’re in Vancouver. How, if at all, does your style change on stage?
It’s all about confidence when you hit the stage. When you’re confident, everything looks better. The crowd helps, because they give you that energy.
Q You seem confident in both your music and your fashion sense. But is there any fashion advice that you would offer to your younger self?
I never wore sneakers in my teens. I would tell my younger self, buy yourself a pair of Js (Jordans). The heels aren’t fooling anyone.
Q You’re a brand ambassador for Denim & Supply Ralph Lauren. How did that role come about?
About six months ago, my publicist mentioned that Denim & Supply was looking for new talent. I was thrilled to even be considered. To now be the face of the brand and work with Bella (Hadid), Cody (Simpson) and Hailey (Baldwin), is a blessing.
Q Do you have a favourite look or item from the line? If so, what draws you to this piece in particular?
I love the entire westernstyle vibe to the collection. It really goes hand-in-hand with my laid-back persona. The best thing about Denim & Supply Ralph Lauren, as a brand, is that it extends past fashion and really becomes a lifestyle. When I’m in the clothes I feel a certain way, and that feeling doesn’t come around all that often.
Q Finally, what are you most excited about when it comes to fall fashion?
Peacoats and kneehigh boots.
