London man creates three new political cereals

- HANK DANISZEWSKI

LONDON, Ont. — Can’t get enough of this never-ending federal election?

Soon, you can snap, crackle and pop your way to the Breakfast of Politicians.

Harper Squares, Trudeau O’s and Mulcair’s Luckiest Charms are three new cereals a London man, Jaime Christian, will soon be peddling online, lampooning the Big Three party leaders in a charity move costing $20 a box or three for $50. The catch? Like the empty promises of so many politicians, the colourful boxes are all sizzle with no cereal or prizes inside.

Christian said it’ll take a couple of weeks to get the boxes delivered from the printer.

Election kitsch and novelty items — from bobblehead figures, to parody songs and videos — are a staple of American political campaigns, but not so common north of the border.

Christian said he got the idea from the online lodging giant Airbnb, which launched Obama Os and Cap’n McCain’s cereals during the last U.S. presidential campaign in a dig at President Barack Obama and his Republican rival John McCain.

“As this campaign heated up, and things turned nasty, I wanted to bring some lighthearted fun to our election,” said Christian, who works as a property manager for his family’s business.

Christian says he’s not partisan and is poking fun at all the parties with the cereal boxes. Nor should anyone interpret the sales as any kind of unofficial poll of which party is likely to win, he said.

Christian plans to start an online Kickstarter campaign for about $10,000 later this week to pre-sell the boxes, with an “earlybird special“selling them for $20 each or three for 50.

Christian plans to sell the boxes online, at polishtick.com.

He said he will donate $5 from the sale of each box to UnLondon, which promotes technology and program skills in London youth.
