The Peterborough Petes have acquired Adam McPhail in a trade from the Saginaw Spirit. In return, the Spirit will receive Peterborough’s ninth round pick in the 2017 OHL Priority Selection.

McPhail, a 6’1”, 195 pounds native of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., played 50 games with the Spirit in 2014-15, registering two goals, four assists, six points and 32 penalty minutes. He also suited up in one playoff game. He was added to the Petes training camp roster on Sept. 2.

“Adam is a hard working player that has an opportunity to add depth and experience to our roster this season,” Petes general manager Mike Oke stated in a release.

McPhail has been with the Petes since training camp opened.

CAIRNS JOINS CORNELL

Peterborough Petes 2014 third-round draft pick Matt Cairns announced Monday night he has committed to play NCAA Division 1 hockey with Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y.

Cairns, a 6-foot-2, 190-pound defenceman from Mississauga, had been playing for the Georgetown Raiders of the OJHL.

Cairns did not report for the Petes training camp last month.

He had been drafted by Petes general manager Mike Oke as a big-bodied defenceman

It’s not known when Cairns will become a member of the Cornell Red.

Cairns was also considering offers from Harvard, Providence and RPI, the Cornell Daily Sun reported.

“Not only is it a great hockey school, the academics are up there with the best of them,” Cairns told The Sun. “Also (head coach Mike) Schafer is one of the best coaches in all of college hockey. He can develop a team as well as develop a player. I cannot wait to play under him and with this Cornell team.”

Schafer views Cairns as a prototype defenceman, The Sun reported.

In 2013-14 he had eight goals, 17 points and 32 PIMs in 33 games for OHL Cup champion Toronto Marlboros.
