Switch to city policing Oct. 1
City police officers prepare to take over from OPP in Cavan Monaghan Township
City police look forward to hitting the ground in Cavan Monaghan in order to find out exactly what the township expects from its new lawmen and women.
Planning for the Oct. 1 switch from Peterborough County OPP to Peterborough Police has been underway for months, but the city service knows it won’t be until officers hit the streets that they truly find out all they need to know, deputy police Chief Tim Farquharson said.
“We’re ready to go for Oct. 1,” he said Wednesday, explaining how from a logistics perspective, everything that needs to be done – testing police radios, for example – has been completed to ensure a seamless transition.
It’s an exciting time for the service and a new challenge for officers, the deputy chief said, noting how the force has not policing a nearly completely rural municipality in its 160-plus years.
“This is new,” he said, adding how that’s why the force will be gleaning information from community stakeholders in the coming weeks and months.
“We want to find out exactly what they want to see,” Farquharson said, describing the process as determining “what the community sees as a good job.”
At any given time, there are about 25 city residents waiting for police, so officers there are often going from call to call, he said.
In Cavan Monaghan, there will be periods of time where police are not needed, giving them time to be more proactive, such as with crime prevention measures.
The process will involve finding out which issues - such as traffic, drug trafficking or property crime – are most important to residents.
To prepare for the switchover, city police shared information Wednesday intended to assist township residents with connecting with the force and its services. That includes: In an emergency contact 911. In a non-emergency situation contact 705-876-1122.
Victim services 705-876-1122 ext. 268.
Collision reporting centre: Located inside the police station, 500 Water St.
The service will have administrative space at the municipal office at 988 County Rd, 10, Millbrook.
